Computers – A Real Estate fact of life
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010What do computers have to do with real estate? Well nothing. Well everything. So what is it?
I remember when I bought my first house and even the two after that; computers were not even a part of the equation. You saw a sign, you read an ad, you called a real estate agent to find out what was for sale. One agent spent many an hour and many miles showing me houses, none of which I remember actually choosing to see, just those he chose for me. Today, it is almost unheard of to think of buying property with out the use of the internet to discover what might be ‘out’ there and where would sellers be without the world wide web exposing their house to millions and millions of people? Heck, we don’t even buy a vacuum cleaner without Googling somewhere to compare prices and read the comments of consumers. Not to mention the Multiple Listing Service, filling out contracts, emailing, databases of contacts, customers and clients.
It’s a whole different world; this modern real estate market. Not only do we Realtors® have to understand and embrace this very clear fact, but our buyers and sellers do too. No longer does it make sense to depend on our customers to shop for homes out of a magazine or newspaper. Our markets are global, not just in our own back yards.
Yes, computers are important, in fact they are essential and not an option for us Realtors®.
